The year was 1975 and Sunderland was on her first camping trip somewhere deep in the woods of Western Maryland. After a quick survey of the scout troop, the group leader handed out assignments. Some were chosen to erect a tent while others scattered to gather wood. Sunderland stood alone eagerly awaiting her orders. After a pensive look, the leader spoke the words that would determine Sunderland's life's work; "Why don't you make us a pretty little centerpiece for that picnic table?" In a design career that spans almost three decades, Sunderland continues her search for the perfect centerpiece.
